Freelance vs Agency: Finding Your Perfect Design Match

Polio Network Victoria brand style guide.

Choosing who to trust with your brand is a bit like choosing a travel partner for a long road trip. You want someone who shares your pace, understands the map, and won’t get grumpy when you take a wrong turn.

In the design world, this usually comes down to two paths: the large agency or the independent freelance graphic designer.

I live in Melbourne but work closely with clients across Australia and New Zealand, so I see how both worlds operate. Neither is better, but one is likely a much better fit for where you are right now.

The agency experience: The big ship

Agencies are like luxury liners. They have a specialist for everything – a strategist, a copywriter, a project manager, and the designers.

  • The Pro: You get a massive amount of brainpower in one room.
  • The Reality: All those specialists mean higher overheads, which leads to higher logo design fees and longer wait times for small changes. You might also find yourself talking to a manager rather than the person actually doing the work.

The freelance experience: The nimble waka

Working with a graphic designer freelance setup – like what we do here at Elastic Design – is more like jumping in a nimble waka. We move fast, we’re close to the water, and the person you talk to is the person doing the work.

  • Direct Connection: When you hire a freelance design graphic specialist, there is no middle man. Your feedback goes straight to the source.
  • Agility: Need a quick social media tile or a tweak to a flyer? A melbourne graphic designer working independently can usually pivot much faster than an agency with a rigid schedule.
  • Transparency: You aren’t paying for a fancy inner-city office or a water machine. You’re paying for the craft.

The blueprint: No stopwatches, just value

One of the biggest differences you’ll find here at Elastic Design is how we handle the budget. While many might quote a graphic designer hourly rate, I prefer to keep things transparent with a flat fee.

This means you know exactly what the investment is before we even start the first sketch. No surprise invoices, no accidental overtime – just a clear path forward.

I offer a range of branding options tailored to different budgets and stages of business. Whether you’re just starting out or ready for a full refresh, each package is designed to be a complete toolkit.

What’s in the kit? It’s not just a logo and a good luck. To help you get things rolling immediately, every option includes essential collateral. Depending on your choice, this might look like:

  • Social Media Starters: Profile images and headers so you look professional from day one.
  • Business Card Designs: Ready for the printer (and I can help suggesting some printers, too).
  • Brand Style Guide: A simple, no-fluff guide on how to use your colours and fonts so your brand stays consistent.

By bundling these essentials into a flat fee, we ensure you aren’t left with a beautiful logo but no way to actually use it.

What to expect: Our shared journey

Once we’ve decided to work together, we follow a clear, collaborative path. There are no black holes here – you’ll always know exactly where your project stands.

  • Planning (1-2 weeks): Once the signed Client Agreement and deposit are received, your project is officially booked into my schedule. This ensures I can give your brand my full, undivided attention.
  • Content: We use Asana for our collaboration. You’ll upload any supporting content (images and text) there so no time is wasted and I can hit the ground running.
  • Design: This is where the magic happens. I’ll get to work on the artwork and share a link with you so you can see the concepts coming to life.
  • Feedback: We’ll work together to fine-tune the design. Whether we are looking at the logo design cost or the fine details of a layout, we keep going until the final concept is reached.
  • Delivery: Once the final payment is made, your brand-new files are delivered to you, ready to show off to the world.

Which one is for you?

If you have a massive, multi-national budget and six months to spare, an agency might be the go.

But if you’re looking for an expert who treats your project like their own – someone who is just as invested in your success as you are – then a freelance graphic designer is your best bet.

Whether you’re in Melbourne or over in NZ, I’d love to hear about what you’re building.
